Fiberglass Boat Laminate Schedule

Fiberglass cloth is both expensive and quite thin, thus is not a cost-effective material for building up bulk in a laminate. normally it is used in the body of a laminate only in small boats or in race boats and high-end performance cruisers where saving weight is a priority.. With the design factors set, swanhart was ready to specify the materials and ply schedule. as one of a group of designers who prefer not to use wood-cored laminates below the waterline, he went with a solid fiberglass laminate for the wetted hull, using an industry-standard factor of safety of approximately 2.. On a small boat of 6m / 20ft. it could be a single layer of 5 oz stain weave polyester... or e fiberglass and 0.5mm / 0.02" thick total for occasional sport use. on an 25m / 80ft. it could be just that as the small boat or a made or several layers and perhaps 3 mm / .125" thick for a work boat..

There is a more sophisticated technique for pressing air out of a laminate, called vacuum bagging, that has been around since the earliest days of fiberglass boat building. here a plastic skin is taped over a layer of laminate after it is laid down and wet out, then air is pumped out from beneath the plastic.. Fiberglass cloth is both expensive and quite thin, thus is not a cost-effective material for building up bulk in a laminate. normally it is used in the body of a laminate only in small boats or in race boats and high-end performance cruisers where saving weight is a priority.. In doing so, they bond mechanically and chemically to form a hard, laminate part that cannot be reformed. think in terms of a boat. many boats are made using fiberglass, which begins as a textile–like a long piece of fabric that comes on a roll. fiberglass is laid into a mold that will create the boat's hull..
